RIOTERS brought “shame on the streets of Salford and Manchester” last night, Greater Manchester’s assistant chief constable said. Police made 113 arrests overnight as shops were smashed, burned and looted. Assistant Chief Constable Garry Shewan said: "This has been senseless violence and senseless criminality of a scale I have never experienced in my career." Councillor Pat Karney, of Manchester City Council, said the violence marked "one of the worst days that Manchester has ever seen". CUSTOMS OFFICIALS in Cheetham Hill have seized 300,000 smuggled cigarettes. Two men were arrested at the scene and a Vauxhall van has been confiscated after it was pulled over and found containing 41 boxes of contraband fags. It is believed the total amount of revenue evaded amounted to £58,000.
A GREATER MANCHESTER fire boss has hit back at criticism after putting in an expenses claim for over £20,000. Fred Walker, chairman of the Greater Manchester Fire Authority, has sent a three-page email to colleagues justifying claiming three-years of expenses despite authority guidelines suggesting claims should be made within four months.
A CAR CRASH which killed a seven-year-old girl, her auntie and grandfather may have been caused by a mechanical failure. The black Cadillac family car was turned onto its roof after the horror crash in Chadderton, Oldham, on Saturday. Police are investigating whether the hand-controls in the specially adapted car for disabled drivers had become stuck.
