Upcoming events at the Engine House

Housed at the Engine House, Chorlton Mill, the International Anthony Burgess Foundation has got plenty of events lined up this February.

At 6pm on 10 February, the author of Quilt and Professor of English at the University of Sussex, Nicholas Royle, will be talking with his namesake. The anthologist and author, Nicholas Royle, will be discussing Quilt and his own novels.

The 11 February sees events taking place in both the afternoon and evening.

Between 1pm and 3pm, Christopher MacLehose will be hosting Literature Northwest’s first seminar of the year. Having established his own printing company, he had phenomenal success when he commissioned Steig Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy books. This is a free event but booking is advised as this is a rare opportunity for publishers, translators and agents to meet MacLehose.

From 7pm, Gerry Potter will be hosting two teams of poets who will battle it out with their take on what romance really is. Tickets cost £5, with £3 tickets available for concessions and for anyone brave enough to fill an open mic spot before the main event.

Music and poetry will be returning to the Engine House at 2.30pm on 12 February as part of the Poets and Players series. Ann Sansom, Nina Boyd and Jo Rose will all perform with Mario Petrucci taking to the microphone for the following Poets and Players event on 5 March.

Looking further ahead, Jodi Dean will present a lecture on ‘Communicative Capitalism: what democracy looks like’ on 9 March at 7.30pm. A political scientist, Jodi will be holding this discussion in association with the Institute for Humanities and Social Science Research. The discussion is free to attend but advance booking is required.
