Manchester Hotel Joins World's Coolest

The great Great John Street Hotel is, officially, great. We have all suspected that this hotel is as great as its name suggests since it opened last September, but its über cool status has now been recognised by a prestigious travel guide, the Conde Nast traveller’s mag.

The Great John Street Hotel has been included on the magazine’s “Hot List 2006”, one of only 60 hotels in the whole wide world to receive the accolade, and one of only four hotels in the UK. Not bad going at all for a hotel that only opened its groovy doors a few months ago.

Set within the former Old School House in central Manchester, the Great John Street Hotel is Manchester city centre’s first ‘boutique’ style hotel, with individually designed rooms and beautiful and quirky features. The hotel was created by Sally and Eamonn O’Loughlin, owners of the revered Didsbury House and Eleven Didsbury Park hotels, somewhat surprisingly located in Didsbury.

The concept behind the hotel is "an eclectic mix of New York loft meets vintage chic", and it boasts 30 individually designed duplex suites, an exclusive cocktail lounge, and a rooftop garden complete with an external hot tub. Some of you may remember the rooftop garden (though not the hot tub) being very much enjoyed by Manchester Confidential staff at the controversial ‘Poppadum Challenge’ a few months ago – rematch to come soon!

The authors of the Conde Nast Travellers’ Guide had what must have been a very difficult time travelling the world and visiting hundreds of hotels in order to compile the Hot List 2006. Of The Great John Street Hotel they commented that the bar has “the kind of brushed velvet decadence Dorian Gray would approve of”, before claiming that “even the smallest rooms won’t disappoint”.

Celebrity guests to have been not disappointed by their rooms at the hotel so far have included rock and roll wild child Pete Docherty and ear muncher Mike Tyson, as well as the stars of Granada’s Soapstar Superstar, and Manchester crooners Simply Red.

The Great John Street Hotel’s inclusion amongst the 60 hottest hotels in the world is testament to Manchester’s reputation as the UK’s centre of cool, and of course to the hotel’s exquisite service, facilities and design. Great stuff.
