The Royal Exchange’s first production of 2010 is a major revival of one of the great American classic family dramas - Lorraine Hansberry’s A RAISIN IN THE SUN
Lorraine Hansberry’s HUMANE and HEART-RENDING classic “...isn’t there something wrong in a house – in a world – where all dreams, good or bad, must depend on the death of a man?”
Lena’s life in Chicago’s Southside has always been about “how to stay alive and still have a pinch of dignity too”, but now that the insurance money from her husband’s death is about to come through, her family sees the chance to make their dreams come true. Maybe Walter Lee can buy a liquor store, maybe Beneatha can become a doctor, maybe Ruth can have a house with a whole lot of light, and Lena a yard with a little patch of dirt where flowers can grow.
However, as each dream threatens to strangle the other and the world continues to stand in their way, the family soon finds that the struggle to retain life and dignity is harder than ever in Lorraine Hansberry’s HUMANE and HEART-RENDING classic.
