Superb a la carte offer back for 2 weeks in July
2 courses from the A La Carte menu for only £18
Or even better value, 3 courses and a glass of wine for £25
The Mark Addy, once barely worth crossing the Irwell for, has a lot of things going for it right now. Rob Owen Brown is heading up the kitchen so the food is first-rate. Summer so far has been good, so its riverside outdoor area is coming into its own. And, finally, it's just announced that the very limited edition Strictly Confidential offer that ran for only 10 days in June, is coming back for 2 weeks at the end of July.
The deal is you get two courses for £18, or three courses and a glass of wine for £25. You can choose anything you like from the a la carte menu. For food of this quality, imagination and style, that's a very good offer.
A Confidential crew headed down there to try it out, and returned all giddy and gleeful about what they'd just devoured.
For starters, they found a favourite in the coddled duck egg with Morecambe bay shrimps and toast soldiers. It was a grown-up boiled egg served in a little cup with a shrimp bisque in the bottom, and a creamy froth on top like a cappuccino. Why shouldn't a restaurant serve boiled egg and soldiers? Especially when it looks and tastes as good as this.
Another winner was the hot smoked salmon with cauliflower, chives and summer truffle – it was a creamy cauli mash with a contrasting crispy salmon skin on top – flavoursome, light, and delicious.
For mains, they had pan-fried dab with cockles and spring onions – great juicy clams, fish flaking off the bone, and generous portion sizes. This was a fresh, light dish – perfect summer eating. The pork chop with honey-roasted bramley went down well too. A big piece of juicy pork lifted by little chunks of sweet and juicy apple. Combined with the rosemary potato cake underneath, it made a lovely and filling dish.
For puds, they went for the Manchester Tart. Topped with coconut swirls and banana slices, it looked the part. When you broke into the pastry case, the jammy, gooey filling oozed out. One of the girls said it made her proud to live in Manchester.
The marinated roasted peaches with rosemary ice cream were finished almost as fast. Warm moist peaches, marinated in honey and cinnamon with rosemary ice cream on the side. It worked a treat.
They only tried a small selection of the dishes on the a la carte menu – have a look at the full menu below. If you've not been to the reinvented Mark Addy yet – now's the time. This offer is only running from 18th July until 31st July. Book now before it fills up.
