Arlindo Arjindo Goes Home…

…to Home, a restaurant out in Dunham Massey. Arlindo certainly is getting a wide and varied CV. Get settled for a while there Arlindo, people may start talking! Arlindo’s last gig was at the highly rated Linen in Manchester235. He is worth a visit usually; let Gordo know, use the rants below.

Francis Carroll & Cabbage Hall

Francis is getting some great reports about his restaurant over at Little Budworth. Francis, one of the restaurant game’s great characters has had another, Marco Pierre White, up for a jolly recently which Gordo missed due to ‘flu. Gordo missed a great couple of days apparently.

Reports please. Francis, do you have a website yet? Let Gordo know so we can have a look at your menu.

Robert Kisby, Cock O’Barton

Another defector to Wind in the Willows territory writes:

“Now cooking happily at the Cock o' Barton Bar Restaurant once again making a name for the quality product served in fantastic surroundings (with windows you can look out of!) Come on Gordo I've been open ten weeks and you haven't bothered coming, move your ass. Regards, Rob K.”

Good cook our Robert, Gordo will be eating over there as well, it’s south of Chester by all accounts. Again, reports would be appreciated, fill in a rant below. Robert, send me your menu so I can tell everyone what’s cookin’

Circle Club Debate

The debate was on the subject ‘is print media dead?’. The Manchester Confidential MD Andy Mullett, allowed on the panel for the first time, was winding up the floor by saying that all print is dead and will be completely over in seven years. It’s hard to take these debates seriously when The Mallonator, T-Shirt seller extra-ordinaire and night club magnate, won’t invest in a decent PA system. The debate raged for hours with the people at the back shouting, “speak up, we can’t hear you at the back”. Again and again.

Le Mont

The excellent Jerzy (George) Bezier wrote to give Gordo a bollocking last week about reporting on the demise of Le Mont, the fine dining restaurant on the roof of Urbis, without asking him. There appears to be more to this than meets the eye. A busy venue during the evening, it seems that the group who owned it just weren’t interested, which was a pity. Gordo is going to invite George out next week to find out what he is up to.

Any comments on Le Mont? Use the rants button below.

Mai Bai

This is a Noodle/Sushi bar open at the top end of Princess Street opposite the Town Hall. Fantastic Chicken Teriyaki Soup Noodle, eat in, take out. They have just received a drinks licence, so you can get a beer there as well. Gordo will be reviewing next week. It will be good. Gordo just noticed our Editor has done a piece on the place, have a look by clicking here:

The Malmaison

Grahame is settling in as General Manager, along with the new kid on the block, chef Kevin Whitefield. Kevin has devised a ‘Home Grown and Local’ menu that looks pretty interesting. He has been visiting local producers to get the best available, resulting in a good looking short menu priced at £13.50 for two courses and £15.50 for three, which is less than a rib eye steak at some gaffs. Duck breast with celeriac mash is simply excellent, from Goosenargh, where else? Peter Papprill, the renowned ‘cheese detective’, is supplying the cheeses and the crème brulee is bangin’ by all accounts.

Has anyone been in Simon Rimmers restaurant in Hale yet? Earle? I have heard its a bit quiet?"

HCB1959 says..
"
I'm trying to find out what happened to the Assembly in West Dids. One night I go there, and it's packed, then a week later, the light's are off and no-one's home. Now I hear rumours of the Restaurant Group making an offer which couldn't be refused. It would be a shame if West Didsbury started to go down the same "chain" drain as Didsbury Village. PS - Home, out on the A56, not just a restaurant but a bar and hotel as well - great place, choice of two roses by the glass and neither of them Gallo Zifandel or Mateus. Shame you need a car to get there!"

deborah says..
"
have been to Earle very good and was busy when I went with my lover xx"

Gordo says..
"
HCB, the word on the street tis that The Assembly is being turned into a Piccolinos. Comments?"

DC says..
"
Visited Earle just before Xmas - really poor. The food was amateurish even with Simon Rimmer at the helm and the restaurant was cold due to the heating being off - in December ! When we commented - they provided us with a fan heater under out table as they said the central heating made the restaurant too hot ! Pleasant surroundings but hugely disappointing cooking, poorly executed."

bigmac says..
"
now been to earle 3 times, think it is just about my favourite place. Staff, food and atmosphere are all first class. Think DC- you're wrong get back there and try the monkfish "

Phil Taylor says..
"
George is rumoured to be hosting a wine tasting evening at the Fat Loaf in Altrincham some time soon. Good stuff going on food wise, at the Fat Loaf by the way. Matt's rose jelly with fruit is a mini miracle."

Gordo says..
"
OK, looks like I will have to make the trip to the suburbs to check out Earle myself; Opinion seems a little split. Any comments on Fat Loaf out there?"

Cabbage Hall - Food was fine, although its reputation in the locality gave us higher expectations. Great ambiance. We booked the table two weeks in advance to be called on the day to ask if we minded moving from an 8.00 pm to an 8.30 pm slot - not a problem, however, we did not get given a table until just after 9.30 pm and we finally had our starters served at 10.15."

HCB1959 says..
"
West Didsbury already has the Zen Zero and Azzurro. It doesn't need a chain Italian!Caffe Uno and Est Est Est have that covered in Didsbury Village. What it needs is a chilled bar/restaurant where over 30's don't feel ancient ... which it used to have."

charlie jones says..
"
earle feels like it's tried to hard but somewhere it's wrong and hale is a tough place to open if you don't get it right. food was ok, service was good but nothing about the experience made us want to go again. "

Edith C says..
"
Yes, heard from an ex member of staff that The Assembly will definately be the next Piccalinos - shame eh - oh well must be the Lime Tree's gain. Anyone hear where the Assembly chef might be? Thought the food was fab."

Home. What can I say? Very poor from the moment we entered. Given torn, stained A4 paper menus after having to make our presence felt at the bar as there was no one to welcome us on arrival. Uninspiring menu such as prawn cocktail, melon, vegetable soup for starters and roast beef, salmon for mains. Food was OK but pork was tasteless and the foie gras terrine was simply a rich pate. Well-intentioned but poor service. Waiters carrying drinks, cutlery and glasses to the table - never heard of a tray it seems. After waiting 30 minutes for a dessert order to be taken, we paid and left. As for being 'rammed' -one other table in the restaurant and two people in the bar. Good food, or in this case mediocre food, does not in itself make for a good restaurant. This is a pub with pub service and will stay that way until things improve drastically front of house and the menu becomes more inspired and better executed. I expected better things from this chef - very disappointing."

"
absolutely do not agree with this . yes the menus are paper but plans are in place to change this. the food is really fantastic. sunday is a carvery but still great and always full. i would recommend Home 100"

Grumbly says..
"
There appears to be two 'Home' restaurants in Little Bollington. I had a very similar experience as the reveiwer above. Poor and unprofessional service and bog standard food. Maybe the average diner thinks this level of service and quality of food is acceptable and therfore puts up with it - maybe they've eaten at too many carveries. Either that or Home was good when the other readers visited and I was just unlucky. If that's the case then it needs to be sorted pretty quickly - a restaurant/pub/gastropub, whatever you want to call it, has to be consistant -good food and great service ALL of the time not just some of the time. Just reading between the lines, I have the feeling that a couple of the reviewers may have more than a passing interest in this establishment?"

Janka says..
"
Fantastic food, if you like real food you won't be disappointed. I would definitely eat there again, great atmosphere with attentive service!!! Dinning at Home I cannot wait for an excuse to go there again. WONDERFUL!!! Can’t believe the negative comments about the ‘Home’, me and my friends love it!"

Anonymous says..
"
There seems to be a lot of ManCon readers who eat at Home? A pattern is developing here, each negative revue is swiftly followed by fantastic one. "

pennie says..
"
Me and my family had a wonderful evening at 'home'. The food was delicious and the service was quick, with a friendly front of house. I would not hesitate to recommend it to my friends and family. I look forward to coming again."

Anonymous says..
"
Interesting comments about Home. Up until a couple of days ago, there was only one response to this two-week old story. As soon as a negative review was published, the supporters came out of the woodwork. If it's so good, why wait to voice your opinion? The speed at which these comments are being added also makes me inclined to agree with Grumpy and question the impartiality of some of these reviewers. I live fairly close by and have yet to meet anyone who has had the 'fantastic' experience described - most are pretty indifferent about their visit. Hate to be pedantic but George, you will be 'taking' your mum there, not 'bringing' her and Janka, you look forward to 'going' again, not 'coming' again. I'm sure you get my point "

Anonymous says..
"
Sorry, it was Pennie's grammar I was referring to above, not Janka's"

Anonymous says..
"
Well all I can say is that I and my family went for Mothers Day which wasnt the usual menu but carvery . First table available was 7pm . Very busy and the food was great , very fresh , beautifully presented. waiting staff were excellent but a bit tired due to them having done 300 plus covers when I asked if they had been busy. Still paper menus but thats the only negative point. Do try -its great"

Frustrated says..
"
As a regular reader of this site and one who uses retaurants frequently it is frustrating to see the few who clearly do not understand what makes a restaurant / pub / gastro pub good. I have a family with children under ten and rarely have I found a place that not only welcomes them with open arms but also offers a consistent level of food and service. Home certainly offers the best sunday lunch on this side of manchester, and I for one would rather choose fresh and tasty meals served with an attentive smile from a paper menu than worry too much about a leather bound edition - perhaps annon is in the printing business? I don't think the many people I have seen there on several occassions would agree with annon's culinary opinions..... perhaps they have also written the review for cabbage hall! "

JMC says..
"
As the owner of a successful restaurant, I cannot agree with Frustrated above who thinks that some of the comments posted show that readers do not know what makes a good restaurant. Fresh food & professional service are both equally important but so is attention to detail, both front and back of house. I don't think the fact that paper menus were in use is the point being made here - It's the fact that they were torn and stained. In this reader's opinion, a 'good'restaurant/pub/gastropub is one that welcomes children - my customers applaud the fact that we do not actively encourage children. I for one do not wish to eat in a pub at 9pm on Saturday night, only to be surrounded by mis-behaved and clearly tired and ittritable children, as happened just last week. Some places should remain the preserve of adults, pubs and certain restaurants being amongst them. "

Anonymous says.." Just been to Piccalinos in west didsbury!! Opened on Friday and as far as I am concerned, died on Sunday - what a disaster. Admittedly was not looking forward to it - having been a regular "Assembly goer" but every cheesy italian restaurant stereotype has been given full attention to detail (the guy from Bolton with a mockney Italian accent - so bad you could not tell what he was saying)calling me the equivalent of "miss" in Italian, with a cheeky expression on their faces - and - the horror of horrors, a birthday party with "happy birthday" crappy records and lots of hoots of laughter. Oh god I feel so depressed - please, please tell me I have been in some sort of Italian job nightmare and that the Assembly is just faking and it's all a big fat Italian joke--------I dont think so."

Edith Cocker says.." Hope you didnt have the crappy wine we had at Piccolinos - £14.00 a pop - and it was utter rubbish. The Lime tree must be laughing all the way to the cash register - would rather boil my own head and have it with tagliatteli. "

timperleygirl says..“ I went to Home tonight for a drink as we don't live that far away and like to try all the local places... What can I say? Yuck, yuck yuck. Over-loud music (Motown medley - felt like I was at a wedding disco), poor wine list (I'm talking by the glass - you might get a better deal if you dine I guess), full of loud braying company directors and a carpark stuff with walnut trimmed Jags. The place was strewn with local Alti/Hale/Bowdon style mags and coffee table books and I didn't care much for the decor - zebra print seating and...was that a POLE on the dance floor??? Couldn't get the image of rugger buggers stuffing banknotes into the thongs of botoxed WAGs so I left.

Does anyone know of where Roberto (ex Azzuro and then his own restaurant called Zen Zero) in West Didsbury has moved to? I'd love to taste his wonderful food again. He was brilliant!
