This’n’That

Jonathan Schofield visits an old and unpretentious Manchester classic

Date Published: 06/11/2007

The way to find This'n'That is to walk down Thomas Street and ask. The modest cafe lies down an alleyway which has pretensions of one day growing into a proper street: hence the name, Soap Street. But it’s not kidding anyone and that’s part of the charm. Despite the accelerated gentrification going on all around, Soap Street still needs a scrub. There’s even a touch of dereliction about the place, which remains, if you know where to look, one of the Northern Quarter’s endearing qualities.

It’s not grubby or semi-derelict, but it has an aura of determined authenticity which makes you fall in love with the place straight away

This'n'That fits these surroundings like a glove. It’s not grubby or semi-derelict, but it has an aura of determined authenticity which makes you fall in love with the place straight away. Without a scintilla of swank, or even wank, it’s got a reputation that places such as Cloud 23 would die for. When we did our £100 curry meal comp a couple of months ago this place was a repeat nomination.

It’s got a long pedigree too. Opened for more than two decades it was one of the first generation of curry cafes established when the Northern Quarter was rag trade rather than boho-vague. The on-going popularity, it's packed every lunch, is according to the owner down to "good value and good food. It's not a secret. Finding it seems the only problem. People have been coming here since we started because we're cheap and the food is spot on."

As if to prove this point, the man on the canteen-style table next to us, leaned over, and said, "I work in the CIS, been coming for fifteen years, best place for classic curries in Manchester, never costs more than a £5 and I always leave stuffed having tasted something really good. Somedays I'll go for something mild, sometimes I want it hot, they've got it all for the price of something ridiculous on ciabatta from Pret a whatever."

I was enjoying this. Just by recording the conversations I was getting a review sorted. I wish people were always so obliging. For the record we enjoyed a lovely, juicy lunch involving a lamb karai, lamb and pumpkin, naan, cabbage, chickpeas, a couple of lassi yoghurt drinks...and change from a tenner. With many curries this could have descended into a mess of crude flavours all bunched up for budget. Not here, each dish stood out on its own, distinctive and proud.

Then of course there’s the famous ‘rice and three’ – three meats – which costs £4.50, or the variant of rice, two meats and one veg, pictured here for the princely sum of £4.

This’n’That gets no marks for design, because there isn't any. The place looks like a formica-clad bus station caff from 1973. But it gets full marks for providing cheap food which tastes excellent. And also for dishing out service with a smile. Seek out This’n’That. Spread the good news. Then get ready to receive the text message: ‘Where did you say it was?’, or if your friend is fifteen, ‘whr did u say it ws?’

this n that fan says.." my only concern with this review means it'll be harder to get a seat... best currys i've had."

Janie says.." This n That is a top notch place - the food is fantastic - rice and three for next to nothing and the best tasting curries you'll get anywhere near. For those who haven't tried it - get along there soon as you'll probably have to queue up "school dinner" style to get a seat."

Kid Disco says.." Don't forget the menu changes daily, and the staff are wicked. You've inspired me Jonathan, I'm going again right now!"

debbie says.." I have also been and the food is excellant ."

Neil says.." Absolutely amazing place. And great that it's so close to the city centre and so cheap. It's not even my favourite NQ cafe...but I'd still agree that it's brilliant. I'd be amazed if you got one single negative comment (other than lack of seating space!)."

Adele says.." Great food, quick service, fairly priced! But the only problem now is that there will be nowhere to sit at lunch after this review!! think they may need to look at seating arrangements!"

Kirsty Collin says.." Food is amazing! My husband once ate there everyday for a whole week as a bet (and because he loved it so much!) Mallu is a top bloke! Best curry in Manc (in my opinion!) Mmm my mouth is watering now!!"

joncy says.." Nightmare! This n That has been a lovingly kept secret for years! Well OK, suppose you're right, guess it's rude not to share one of Manchester's top food spots."

peter ridley says.." You deserve shooting for reviewing this, I eat there 3 times a week and will probably not get a seat now!!!!"

Ros says.." Just in case you can't get a seat, they do 'take out' as well"

Mary says.." It's the only place I know that's full at 11:45am on a Monday morning!"

Ash Abdullah says.." I couldn't agree more with what have been said by the others ... it is our ( yes we are many ) weekly friday lunch time must-do just before the friday prayers ... by far the best curry place in town !"

Gordo says.." Just been for a quick lunch (12/11/07) there on everyone's recomendation. The charming guy who serves asked me if it was my first time. Fabulous, friendly and superb value. Easily the best of the 'cafe' style curry houses in town."

Gadge says.." Not been yet but can someone confirm the opening times as the one above overlap."

Chi says..“ I believe its Mon-Thur 11:30 - 4:30pm Fri-Sat till about 10 or 11pm & Sunday till 4 or 4:30 WHich is not so good for me during the week cos i dont get back from till 6:30pm :( ANd I'd love to have some dinners there!

Crazy Owl says..“ What a cracking place, we went on M/C's recommendation and it was well worth it. No frills but great service and the "rice & three" was brilliant. The guy just does what he is good at. Plenty of "suits" when we went but turnover is quick and we only waited a couple of minutes. I can see it being a regular haunt of ours. Two of us stuffed as monkeys for ten quid. It took us two hours for the grins to wear off

Nikhil says..“ Went here today based on this review and comments. Had the 'rice and three' - each one of the 'three' was delicious, with a naan and it was less than a fiver! Will definitely be heading back. Cheers Manchester Confidential!

debs says..“ why did you have to tell everyone its one of the best

CreosoteChris says..“ Try going on a Sunday at lunchtime, when they serve nihari - a fiery, soupy lamb stew. Best eaten with a couple of kebabs and plain chapatis. Years ago, a food-obsessed dining companion asked the guys how they got the lamb so tender. Answer "We start cooking it on Thursday" Eating nihari on Sundays at TnT is almost a religion - it cures all ills, fixes the hangover, and sets you up for a great day ahead. I am not worthy.

StuGfromJDW-OBsales says..“ Great place! But they've changed my lunch time to 5pm:( But i'll be back! Rice and 3 is best value and cooked with pride! If you've a small stomach. Go for a small plate. Costs less too! Help yourself to Corriander and Chilli. Water from the tap, in jugs as it should be! I usually go there late, no probs getting a seat. Poingniant graffiti outside to the right! No nonsence healthy, tasty meal for £2 something. Just ask for this and ask for that....Especially the Dhal. Spinach and lamb curry.

east lancs says..“ The mighty TnT may be many things, but "healthy" it certainly isn't!

Chick says..“ The owners of This' n' That are in the process of opening up a small city centre place - should be open in a few weeks I've been told

StuGfromJDW-OBsales says..“ Spinach, Chick peas. Lamb.. Healthy is relative...The menu has fresh ingredients. Look up coconut oil on the web...I brought some from Thailand. It's a Saturated fat. There's been a real downer on saturated fats in the past decades. But i use it for frying, in fact i sprinkle it on yogurt. Sprinkle is the word. Because at room temperature here it's a solid. Like lard but coconutty! Great for hair, skin and an immunisator against the latest Bio hazards they throw at us. AKA swine flu. Thinking of importing and selling it. COCONUT OIL! Who will buy? ;)

Chick says..“ I would. Buy coconut oil that is
