Bra fitters busted
An undercover investigation has found bra fittings just aren’t measuring up…
Date Published: 22/01/2010
Bra shopping is no easy task. No matter what your size, there are a lot of things to take into consideration in the quest for the perfect support and style. And even when we think we’ve found it, in actual fact most of us still end up wearing the wrong size bra. What’s a girl to do?
Badly fitted bras don’t just look awful – they can also cause neck, shoulder and back ache and poor posture.
Many of us prefer to pass the responsibility over to a professional bra fitter, normally in a department store or lingerie shop. It makes perfect sense, given that they’re specially trained up and ready to take on all manner of shapes and sizes. But according to new research by consumer magazine Which? fewer than one in three of the most popular bra fitting services measured up.
Which? sent 11 researchers, aged 25 – 75 with a DD cup size or larger, to a total of 70 specialist and high street stores to buy an everyday bra. Whilst the survey focused mainly on bra fittings for ladies with larger busts, it’s also worth noting that smaller busted participants were equally as disappointed with the level of service.
The bra brigade visited various branches of John Lewis, Bravissimo, Marks & Spencer, Debenhams, La Senza and House of Fraser. A quarter of the fittings were deemed appalling and some of the women were sold wildly different sizes by different shops. In one case this varied by seven sizes from a 34FF to 40D.
Another was sold exactly the same bra in two House of Fraser branches but in sizes 34C and 34F, both of which were a terrible fit. Despite the difference in age and requirements, the 30 and 75-year-old researchers were sold the same Wonderbra-style bra in La Senza – it fitted neither.
Badly fitted bras don’t just look awful – they can also cause neck, shoulder and back ache and poor posture. One participant of the study commented: “When I took it off, I had a lot of breast pain. I’ve had this sort of pain before and on that occasion was referred to the breast unit which said it was probably a badly-fitting bra.”

Jenny Driscoll from Which? said: “Whatever their bra size, women want to look good and feel good. Heading to the high street for a fitting might seem like a simple solution, but the results we found were shocking - one bra was so poorly fitted there was room for a pair of socks in the cups.If stores are going to offer this service to customers they need to up their game: do it properly or don’t do it at all.”
John Lewis and Bravissimo received the best overall scores, but according to Which? still weren’t good enough to recommend.
Bra testers judged each bra on front and back underband tension, cup capacity, cup depth, east-west (breasts pointing forward), side seam depth, suitable wire shape, stability, overall fit, potential future comfort. These combined give the overall score percentages:
- John Lewis 45%
- Bravissimo 43%
- Marks & Spencer 36%
- Debenhams 35%
- La Senza 31%
- House of Fraser 28%
Tips for getting the right fit
- Get to know what brands fit you well.
- Make sure your bra fitter makes you feel comfortable. They shouldn’t measure you over clothes.
- Visit independent lingerie shops and try buying online to save money (provided you can send it back if it doesn’t fit.)
- Look after your bras. A bra will last six months on average before components deteriorate, but 16% of you have bras more than five years old. Out with the old and in with the new.

A bra will last a year or more if you invest in a decent one. High street chains stick a measuring tape around you and instantly you feel you're in safe hands (pardon the pun). All bras vary and you're rarely the same size in every shape and brand. Bras can feel good in the shop but wait till you're doing the hoovering or walking the dog...Visit an independent for personal service and expert advise.

They have tested a rather extreme section of the population. In my opinion M&S have a brilliant selection for the lady with a larger bust. You've got to remember that even individual bra styles in a single shop will fit differently as they're deisgned to do different things. Push up, push in, push out, push together etc etc. Plus each bra is very adjustable itself. I think you've been a bit unfair on the shops.

Pearl, I believe ManCon offer advertising opportunities at great prices. May be a better idea to call them than put your advertising post on this thread 4 times!

Can I third that, albeit reluctantly. Hard hard to navigate, part of the old beauty used to be the simplicity. It's not as easy to see all the latest articles. Hope it's just teething problems as there seems to be less people using the site and you don't want that! Or perhaps it's like when you buy a new album and it's shit at first but after a while you wonder why everyone else in the world doesn't love it. Or something like that.

Ah I love the new look. Alas the launch has fallen during a massively busy week for me so I can't be about too much. I'm a Hero though, already had two rebates back from strictly thingie bookings

Jonathan, you need a 'new on site' column - people haven't the inclination to wade through the site each time to see what's been added since they last logged on.

I agree about the site being hard to navigate and the muti-colour swap shop design is hurting my eyeballs. Two stories that were behind the pay wall earlier are now free to view and I booked a table off the strictly offers as soon as I was e-mailed details, I am not a hero or friend. OK, I did not get the £10 rebate, but someone somewhere along the lne is paying that, either the restaurant or Man Con and in my humble opinion, it can't be sustained without either a massive increase in members from the Man Con side if they pay the rebate or the restaurant involved losing money if they are the ones that pay.

This article does not surprise me at all! I go all the way to London to be measured at an independent lingerie shop in Islington, the lady is truly amazing... she can tell your size just by looking & then just measures you to confirm. Amazing bra's & fit every time and an excellent selection for larger busted ladies!
I have been to M&S once and was deeply offended when I was told I needed a 38DD which did not fit in any shape or form... I was highly disappointed and for that I will never return!

I would also like to add that M&S for me sell the worst shaped & fit of bra I have ever tried... pretty designs for little money, but the quality is gone on the fit!
Life is better at M&S if your in anything less than a D cup... I only where Fantasie, Rigby & Peller or Freya (all the same make really) but they never disappoint!

Two points. Three actually. To the Anon a few comments above, the main panel of the new site is called Latest Articles. Secondly to the anon above, we've had underwear stories for four years. Thirdly odd that these comments appear on a bra story so thank you for your support. Actually there's a fourth point. There are lots of tweaks to do so bear with us.

I don't buy that Northerngeezer.
Like, do you think people from Starbucks get home and think "oh man, I'd love to make a cup of coffee"? No, they don't. Now, do you think a gynacologist gets home to his wife and thinks.... You get the picture.
