EXCLUSIVE: Police Call-outs To Bars, Clubs, Restaurants, F&B Outlets

Here's the 2012 list of 450 venues

Published on February 13th 2013.

EXCLUSIVE: Police Call-outs To Bars, Clubs, Restaurants, F&B Outlets

CONFIDENTIAL has received a list of almost 450 venues across the city centre following a Freedom of Information request.

Tiger Tiger has worked its way up from number three to number two to number one in three years.

The list includes bars, pubs, restaurants, cafes and clubs operating under A1 planning permission. It reveals Greater Manchester Police call-out rates from 1 January and 31 December 2012. There were almost 7,000 call-outs, comparable to 2011.

As the police say: 'The address recorded on an incident is not necessarily the location at which it occurred; addresses may be used as a reference point or a landmark when reporting an incident (for example, incidents may have occurred in the street outside the premises).'

Some clear patterns emerge.

Take, for example, some of the principal night-life areas and the numbers of call-outs set against the number of venues.

Thus (according to our approximate count):

Village - 1316 call-outs, 42 venues (average 31.3 per venue)

Northern Quarter - 700 call-outs, 45 venues (average 15.5 per venue)

Printworks - 675 call-outs in total, 241 to The Printworks generally, 434 to 13 individual venues (average 33.3 per venue)

Deansgate Locks - 527 call-outs, 6 venues (average 87.83 per venue)

Clearly then, Deansgate Locks has by far the highest incidence of call-outs, even though the Village has much more individual call-outs. The Northern Quarter is the biggest geographical area, has the most venues, and the lowest average of number call-outs.

As for individal venues Tiger Tiger has worked its way up from number three to number two to number one in three years. Remarkable work. Although it is very popular.

Meanwhile the percentage of incidents emanating from the top ten remains stable at around 20 per cent during 2012 and 2011.

Chain burger bars are absent this time from the top ten, but that doesn't mean very much. In 2012, Burger King in Mosley Street, Piccadilly, received 107 call-outs as opposed to 109 in 2011, and missed the top ten cut by one position.

No proper restaurant comes anywhere near the top ten list although many feature. Dining out is clearly the key to a trouble free evening.

Finally as we stated last year, the city centre is generally a very safe place in which to enjoy yourself. We do it all the time, nightly indeed, at Confidential.

Also remember the list here reflects the total number of police callouts and could have been caused for a variety of reasons: an argument, a theft, a fight or a simple misunderstanding. They are a blunt instrument for guidance only.

Thus some old venues will appear where incidents happened even though they are closed. Or some locations will appear twice such as Harpers and its successor 2Kozy.

Finally, the actual number of arrests per weekend is usually very low.

No call-outs is very good David.

City Centre Labour councillors are constantly monitoring the activity of venues and we routinely support GMP with licence reviews for premises who are not acting as good neighbours. We're working towards a situation where all venues act responsibly and visitors to and residents in the city centre can be confident of a safe and enjoyable night out no matter where they go.

According to the list above Fac 251 had 195 call outs but it isn't in the top 10?

What does it take for a place like Tiger Tiger to be shut-down when the Labour council has used the slightest reason to shut-down community pubs?

The ghost of delis past makes an appearance at Love Saves the Day in the complete list! Reckon the police know where they're going?!

This list is wrong

Choice is down for 3 and I can confirm these we're for false burglar alarm calls.

As we state in the copy, it's a blunt instrument and if you read the police words and the sentence about 'misunderstanding' then we are well aware of this. However if you want to seek evidence of trends then it has value.

AnonymousFebruary 13th 2013.

The list is a joke, and where's Bar Eight?

Jon GrievesFebruary 13th 2013.

I just think its a shame that people can read this info and make a snap judgement that somewhere might have issues.

Next year maybe only show those that have an issue within the trends and highlight these high numbers. Maybe check if their burglar is on the duff first though.

Don't be so reactive. Three is good. Anybody with an ounce of sense can read the list and understand that three over the whole year is very good and could be for any number of reasons. Sheesh.

How can Baty's on Windmill Street be on there, this has been closed for at least 10 years hasn't it?

As the police say in the article: 'Addresses may be used as a reference point or a landmark when reporting an incident (for example, incidents may have occurred in the street outside the premises).'

Then the whole thing is a complete waste of time. The people picked up outside of Baty's could have been from the Radisson, the Midland or a party conference at Manchester Central.

Be careful. In general bars are responsible for what goes on on on the curb outside an on half way across the street if it is closed.

This article serves about as much use as an IQ test for Jeremy Hunt. It is so flawed that it's a shame to think of the shoe leather costs of throwing it together....very poor, indeed lazy.......just a humble opinion!

Trev BrennanFebruary 14th 2013.

Not true. It's a very useful article or at least fascinating. It shows where hotspots are and it indicates where the police have been called out too. The lower number venues are less useful but the higher numbers indicate a large concentration of issues of various sorts in those areas.

SmittyFebruary 14th 2013.

I agree with Trev and reckon it's a useful article, Dicky. I reckon Mancon readers are mature enough to get that it doesn't mean that there's been x number of incidents at y venue, but there's likely to be a correlation between y and surrounding venues and the figure for x. But their culmulative analysis of the areas affected is really interesting... But it certainly wouldn't put me off going to, say, Tiger Tiger. The clientele puts me off going there, badoom.

I'm just pleased to see that 'Piccadilly indian restaurant, London Road' is still alive and well in the minds of GMP.

They used to give away a t-shirt if you could finish their vindaloo you know. The restaurant, not GMP.

AnonymousFebruary 14th 2013.

Certain venues and clientèle are as thick as thieves and would NEVER call the police. I bet my life a few of those 'low' call out venues have a lot of crimes going down, but people don't/ won't grass unless in very extreme situations.

Is Holy City Zoo still open?

AnonymousFebruary 14th 2013.

Starbucks are a problem. Shut them down.

AnonymousFebruary 15th 2013.

Yes, HCZ is still open, but just called The Zoo.

The door men at Tiger Tiger cause a lot of the problems and in my opinion this is why Tiger Tiger is always high up on the list. I had a hired a room for a private party and they would'nt allow my guests to dance, asked us to leave 1 hour before we were due to. They were arguing with me and my husband and when I suggested they check and they found we were right they said we were too drunk and kicked us out. I'm 50 for god sake not a kid.

Think the managers need to take a good look at these idiots who think a bit of power gives them the right to treat people like animals.

Rant most certainly not over.

What the cops are complaining about when I go to hearings is the variation in closing times across the city. All Canal Street applied for extensions to 4am (there is one still to be heard. But the Print Works bars have 3pm.

If you are not pissed enough come and fall in the canal after a good set-to.

Best bet is to behave yourself and not get into any bother :)

I would like to express my concern over the figures stated for The New Union Hotel. As many people are aware this venue is a landmark and a meeting point for taxi's. I would like to know if this has been taken into consideration with regard to the figures shown? Being a landmark club at the junction between Princess street and Canal street Many people will use our venue as a reference point to the police even if no incident or offence has occured within our premises. Please could this be clarified or taken into consideration as myself and my family have made a serious effort in the reduction of crime in and around our venue. Many thanks Robert Ramsbottom Manager The New Union Hotel
