Councillor Pat Karney: Is his job to;

  1. Tell us we can’t have a drink and watch ENGLAND?!
  2. Ensure the dustbins are emptied?
  3. Attract visitors away from The Trafford Centre to the City by making it easier to park, therefore ensuring more dosh gets spent with us?

The Evening News reports this week that Councillor Pat ‘Humbug’ Karney and the City Council have cancelled the screening of England games because there was a bit of a kerfuffle on the day when 15,000 Mancunians turned out for one of the best spontaneous parties of the year. A handful of fans were arrested for causing trouble. Out of 15,000.

Humbug also wants the manager of Tesco on Market Street dragged out of the store and executed in the gutter, ‘like a dog’, for selling beer. Blimey.

“It was horrific,” snarls Humbug. “Children as young as eight were being given tins of beer”. Here at Manchester Confidential we can just imagine the odd dad pretending to let his son have a sip to keep him quiet. The kid hates the sip, but feels part of the party and stops bloody mithering. Humbug spots it and collapses in panic.

As it happens, this publisher was also buying alcohol in Tesco on Market Street on the day, in amongst what seemed like a hundred good natured guys ‘n’ gals, non of them looking like trouble and all intent on getting a few beers on board and having a good time supporting our team. We say good luck to them.

Anyone who has been watching the games on TV will have also seen how well the German authorities have managed the crowds in their cities, treating them like grown ups which results in 99.9 percent of them having a great time. Yes, say the authorities over there, we accept there will be a few loonies, but we are confident in our ability to manage the risk and ensure that the huge majority of law abiding, fun loving football fans have a ball.

Councillor Karney, get a life. Us Mancunians know how to behave, we party hard, and some people get carried away. So? We take pride in supporting England and the flag of St. George. We do not need to be herded into a sterile enclosure in Castlefield, worryingly close to railway sidings, having queued for tickets on the other side of the City. We are not children. The Germans have got over the need to do it, why can’t you?

By the way. Exchange Square is owned by The People, not The Council.
