Helicopter, moon And Town Hall clock
Police on Cross Street/King Street shouting: "Go home, go home, get out of the city." And the kids just laughed.
Here are some more pics - including ones of girls taking the jeans from a mannequin in Diesel on Cross Street.
It's all so bloody aimless and silly now there's almost something to say.
UPDATE: 19.55
It's like kids are in the ultimate disco here, it's a massive distortion of what's normal into something utterly different.
A kid passed by in Albert Square after a crowd surge and was pouring out wine from a bottle and putting petrol in. Things seem to be escalating.
This is recreational violence. Here are some more pictures.
There's a preacher telling the police they're going to die on Market Street.
Police charges everywhere. But are there enough police about?
Manchester's in trouble.
UPDATE: 19.30
Quote: "So we're going to do TK-Maxx first then?"
Fire vans every where.
At Ugg, older black man in his late twenties sent two young white lads aged fifteen, into the store, saw people filming him and got them out.
It's a multi-racial riot this. Every colour and creed. Mostly white lads.
UPDATE: 19.19
Fire in Miss Selfridge on Market Street.
The kids are clearly finding this tremendous fun. They seem to have no care for the fact they are hurting themselves and their families and their futures.
They have dressed in their best uniforms for the 'fun'.
Tesco in Market Street seems in trouble.
You can cut the atmosphere with a knife.
Reiss cleaned out.
UPDATE 19.02:
The Ugg store on New Cathedral Street has been completely looted.
Marks and Spencer have put trolleys against the door to prevent looters getting in.
Selfridges has been attacked.
There are problems on Market Street but the riot police have cordoned it off.
The Northern Quarter may have some problems.
All the shops and restaurants in town are closed except one.
Gordo, Sleuth and Grimsey are sat in it, prior to another sortie on to the streets.
UPDATE 18.48:
Sadly it seems the rumours are becoming reality.
A brief walk around the city centre revealed gangs of youths and men from age 12 up into their thirties congregating at key junctions.
It appeared they were waiting for a critical mass of their fellows to join them. On Exchange Street that critical mass was reached and a mob broke away and ran into St Ann's Square.
They were pursued by police, a sergeant barking, "In line, keep the line."
Round at the junction of St Ann's Street and Deansgate the windows of Patisserie Valerie had been smashed.
The mob had headed down towards Spinningfields.
The worrying thing is that behind the police line scores of lads were gathering again.
They could be heard saying, "Have you got him on his BBM?"
There seemed about two girls for every twenty or so males.
It looks like it's going to be a long night.
Police On Guard Outside Asda, Hulme
-----------------------------------------------------
That rumour mill eh?
Every hour rumours about potential riots in the city centre are being circulated.
'Only idiots destroy their own city.'
These are having an effect.
Major developers in the city centre have started to batten down the hatches, going so far as to offer 'boarding' for businesses.
Pizza Express has closed early, as have other city centre retailers; some pubs and bars are closing too. The phone shops are shuttered.
Many other businesses are staying open at present but who knows how the contagion of fear will spread? It's like a B-movie: 'Attack Of The Masked Teenagers'.
What is certain is this.
Apart from Pizza Express, where a member of staff in one of the city centre branches stated, "We're closing early under police advice", no other businesses have received this advice.
Instead, Greater Manchester Police has been absolutely clear.
This from GMP's Twitter feed (click here): 'Lots of rumours about businesses being advised to close by GMP. This is not true. No businesses (have been) told to close'.
This from the Assistant Chief Constable, Terry Sweeney, who said: "I want to reassure the public of Greater Manchester that there have been no disturbances or incidents of disorder or rioting here since trouble flared in London over the weekend. We are monitoring the situation extremely closely and are prepared to deal with any situations that may arise.
"We are working closely with community leaders to stand up for calm and together we can maintain trouble free streets.
"I want the public to continue to support the police and their communities and want to stress that speculative gossip and reporting is unhelpful and unwelcome."
The last sentence is interesting.
Because gossip seems the big issue here.
Gossip about what is in effect a shop-lifting flashmob attacking the city centre.
Let's be clear that any anticipated trouble will not be driven by ideology or politics but by teenage boys with no brains, wearing 'issues' of social deprivation, policing or race as an excuse for a scrap and vandalism.
The irony is that we have a commemoration of the Peterloo Massacre taking place this weekend. In August 1819, thousands of people gathered in Manchester to protest against a lack of representation. Fifteen of them died, but there was no looting. This was political, a protest by common people hoping to gain the vote.
The trouble flaring in Britain today is about gaining brands: Nike, iPad and so on.
If Manchester should be attacked, let's hope Greater Manchester Police is firm and positive in its response.
Let's hope the force leads the action not follows it, although it is under acute pressure itself from the recent cuts in its budget and workforce. But that shouldn't be an excuse for not taking the fight to rioting youths.
Meanwhile let's remember that teenagers and young adults across the country involved in this are a minority of a minority of a minority.
A fourteen-year-old child of a Manchester Confidential member of staff forwarded messages from his BBM on his Blackberry.
'Only idiots destroy their own city.'
'If you think you're hard join the army and fight in Afghanistan.'
'I'm not going to be part of this, fighting and hurting over trainers.'
He said: "The messages have all been about standing up to the rioters and not getting involved in this."
That's welcome.
That proves as stated above that this is all about a minority of a minority of a minority. And that not all young people are bad - a point that can easily get lost amid footage of burning buildings and smashed windows.
Still, our fourteen-year-old might be representative of teenagers, but he's not all of them. Others will have different agendas.
Another story on BBM is that there's a way to adapt your Blackberry so the police can't close down the messaging service.
Best thing might be to keep the British stiff upper lip and not let the little sods grind you down.
The police and the council are still maintaining that they are not aware of any planned disturbances. Some businesses are deciding to be cautious under their own steam.
That rumour mill eh?

It says on Facebook that Sainsburys and MacDonalds on Regent road are on fire. Is this true?
Oh you silly Anon, read the article
McDonalds- sodding auto correct!
For pity's sake Anonymous, did you even read the article? Leave the gossip out.
How is people sharing information about areas to avoid unhelpful?
Sharing FALSE information doesn't help anybody and just makes people scared for no reason.
Absolutely not true-they've just been phoned by a Radio DJ and no truth in this one at all
Thanks for clearing that up Ben! :-)
Artist's recreation of Northern Quarter riots in Manchester: http://bit.ly/o9f9kA
When has Manchester ever had to follow suit with the capital??... Never is the answer! Keep Manchester tidy kids!! ;))
According to the Salford Star, there's supposed to be a high police presence around the Bingo and the Broadwalk due to "riot fears", most likely the pissheads who sit outside the old library just got banned from Bargain Booze
I thought the police had "control" at salford precinct it's been stated that a "stand off has been met
is it true than the arndale is on fire?
No.
OLD TRAFFORD IS ON FIRE!!!!
I just saw wayne rooney coming out of the arndale, holding a tv.....he was on FIRE!!!
the tram is on fire!
Isn't there always a high Police presence in Salford?? :))
It will be cool if Manchester doesn't get involved. It was refreshing watching the news and not seeing Manchester's name on the map of incidents last night, whereas Bristol, Nottingham, Leeds, Birmingham and Liverpool couldn't help themselves. I'm not holding my breath that nothing happens in town however I know in the past (10-20 years ago) Manchester would have been a likely city to see replica incidents to London - it just shows that we have positively progressed although like I say I'm not holding my breath.
Just as I read this Manchester was mentioned on Sky News, plus Salford Precinct have people there atm who say they are protesting, which will most likely lead to rioting later, as it is salford! So guess our city has progressed much ey?
& like i said rioting has started, the first place they targeted bargain booze! Classic.
GMP posts explicit info on Twitter denying incidents and yet still they have to deal with tweets saying the end of the world is nigh. Do people have nowt better to do than spread false gossip?

wankers,,, all complaining about lifes shit, country is fck up, we have no money or benifets,,, so yeah great Idea going to wreck the greatest city!! nice one!! WANKERS
should Stagecoach continue to milk their costumers I might consider hiting the streets, too. Rip off Britain.
Nice to have those Blackberry comments from the lad
Tis time to run amok against youth. National Service any one....or at least a rigorous outward bound course.
Apparently Genghis Kahn and his Mongol hordes are right now in John Lewis in Handforth Dean targeting pink iPods for the girls back home in the Yurts making horse milk yoghurt.
Teenage boys with no brains? No girls involved in any of these riots then?
It doesn't look like it.
Disgusting behaviour, youths are getting a bad name because of these scumbags. #Antiriots
No The girls have just been stealing.
there will be calls to 'regulate' social media websites - wait for it!
Nowt wrong with that
goodbye free press - is there a difference to Egypt?
@ ANON: calm down Chicken Licken, the sky won't fall
oops
There are small businesses closing - I have bars in the northern quarter that I've had to pull the shutters down and close- there have been mobs chased down High st and edge st by police- my staff are scared for their safety and cant be expected to be put in danger. Security companies have advised us to close- its no joke and not rumours. This sucks- these little wankers need a good kicking. tonight businesses all over will seriously suffer and only make life worse.
Just heard selfridges is being looted and smashed up.
Bad article- it's not scaremongering - get out there and open your eyes sofa jockeys
where have you heared that from ???
If you read the post, he/she hasn't *heard* it from anyone or anywhere - he/she is in the thick of it....
just read it on manchester confidential that looted ugg shop and smashing selfridges up
Shows what a materialistic World we've become - what happened to "if you can't afford it you don't have it?"
A nice shower from the water cannon would cool
things down!
It is on SKY NEWS now. Manchester City Centre is under siege from mindless thugs. Bring out the water cannon. Bring out the Army. Put a curfew on. Need to do whatever it takes. Totally disgraceful behaviour.
It's still on sky news. There is trouble in Manchester center. Police are telling people to stay away.I agree bring in the Army and do whatever it takes to ger the scum off the streets
Agreed - they get what they deserve then.
after the bomb in Manchester, we the people of Manchester stood up to the plate and bult a fantastic city better than it ever was. its a city of great history and architecture, and great people. why are the youth not proud of this? why do they not want to protect it?
It seem to me that these youth are a law unto themselves they think they are untouchable..... oh I forgot they are! lack of discipline in the home, in the schools, and if they are under 16 it would appear the law cannot really touch them.
what are they smashing up ?
Can't be bothered joining in, this is no conversation. Just a load of bollocks if you ask me.
You've got as child I assume from the 'photo - you damn well should be bothered
why r they doing this pure scallys
boredom and greed, disguised as social unrest...an excuse for a free pair of uggs??
slightly concerned 100 of our riot police have just gone down to London...
typical, no forward planning by GMP!
Knob! It's nothing to do with 'no forward planning'! GMP answered the call to go and protect our capital city................... and I for one are proud that some of Manchester's finest are being deployed to to protect southern jessies, leaving us northerners under protected........... just as long as London is ok!
Danny Dire predicts pain img36.imageshack.us/img36/7559/loldannydyer.jpg…
Where are the police??
http://yfrog.com/gvldwz
london it would appear!
Defending the city you live in form the chavs trying to wreck it!
Where are the water cannon etc
Here, we see all the people who wouldn't think twice about returning a wallet if someone had dropped it and they picked it up. :3
hate them I wish I cud have a rifle - wud shooooot them fuckers
Police on Cross Street/King Street shouting: "Go home, go home, get out of the city." And the kids just laughed.,,,,, Did you expect anything else?
They think you can't do shit. Show them shit then.
From the looks of the Diesel pic above they are doing what they want.
LOL @ All these are the ones who aren't even going to University. :/
I am just curious to know whether the town centre will be safe to go help clear up the mess tomorrow ?
If anyone knows if we're being advised to stay away I'd like to hear.
Thank you
MEN website been down for ages lol. Absolutely shocked by this mindlessness.
Fat lot of good that is.
The girl with the leopard trousers outside the diesel store is in the picture further down where you can see her face. Please send these pictures to the police to get her and her scum friends arrested.
absolutely right.
RE: girl in leopard-print trousers... just what is it she should be arrested for? Standing on the pavement?
Derr! She and her mates are looting! And please don't start bleating on about her 'human right' to stand on the pavement while her scummy mates loot a store in OUR city centre. consider the Human rights of all the victims of these thieving scum's actions - I for one like going shopping in Manchester, the staff have a right to go to work, we all have the right to reasonably priced insurance (premiums will go up for all of us with a manchester post code now) - and it's our council tax that will pay for the clear up
Tell me it isn't true that Afflecks is on fire!
wouldn't that be the end!
Well you got that wrong about gossip!
Got someone on the scene at Afflecks, let you know what we find very soon.
ooh so vital!
Rumour my arse!
Manchester confidential wrong yet again
Knob! Can't see you risking your safety to bring us the news!
not exactly risking safety sitting at a desk saying it not gonna happen! lol
Risking your safety so people can read this shit, no one is really interested in this website.
lol
For something you don't like, you seem to be spending a lot of time on here.
These people have nothing to contribute to society, just shoot the lot of them, no one will miss them.
their parents must be soo proud!!!- what an utter disgrace. They are just a load of free loaders who seem to think that this is just an excuse to have some fun and nick things, re girl in leopard print trousers is nthieving stuff out of the shops in one picture. why are they out on the streets in the first place?? Answer - looking for trouble.
These people deserve the same respect they show for their community - none.
I say hose the scum down.
I'm horrified people are acting this way! And to blame the police is a bloody pathetic cop out. What do you expect them to do? Throw themselves into th unknown with gangs who would get so called "Respect" for killing a police officer? The police are not to blame they are out numbered because the government cut so many jobs. They have just as much of a reason to be angry but they don't jepordise lives by setting peoples homes and businesses on fire. I live in Burnley, a town tarnished by thugs who thought it was ok to riot and cause trouble. To this day we are thought as trouble makers and that sickens me. One day the police will not be there at all cause no-one will want to put their life on the life against morons
Re the girl in the leopart print pants, its her mate pulling that manequin out of the window. Send the pics to the police and get them banged up.. best place for the scum
Hear hear! I hope everybody who has photos like this makes them available to the police - upload them onto flickr or the GMP website, burn them to disc and send them to GMP, anonymously if you want to, get the scum caught!
No MR Martin (clever clogss) Webster...she shouldn't be arrested for standing on the pavement, she should be arrested for stealing goods from the shop and she should be forced to reveal all the other scum that were with her stealing also.
more people should go and help the guy on Deansgate with the bat protecting the shop...people should rise up against this stupid attitude towards our beautiful historic buildings..go out and loot yourself a chav..take his shoes his wallet and then set him on fire see how they like it the bunch of little shits...
Sums up my thoughts too and happy to defend the businesses that need help and the public. If only GMP would say to us law abiders get down here and help instead of stay at home.
I believe your messing about setting people on fire lol but I sure get what your saying :D, yeah I'd be happy to help guard buildings to stop muppets from wrecking them, this is so damn sad & anoying all this nonsense sweeping across the UK.
Was really hoping our city had more sense than this, shame it can be let down by a small bunch of crims capitalizing on a random mad tsunami of crime :(.
where on Deansgate?
News report states Police say public should not go into Centre unless absolutely necessary - I guess protecting innocent people and businesses is necessary.
The police will be having a hard enough time trying to control the looters without the hangers-on getting in the way of their baton runs. Do the sensible thing and stay out of the way, let them get on with it
Baton runs...? maybe if they had gone in hard on the groups it would make the scum think twice.
It's plain to see there are not enough police to control the situation and they are being too soft.
I know it sounds silly, but I expected better from Manchester...we always looked after our own...
I can confirm NOW LIVE that Urmston Weatherspoon's is relaxed and calm.
The beer is still crap too.
All is in order.
righto mate, I'll be round to put the windows through in about 10 mins, liven up you dull pathetic life for you
ta for that
i expected more from Manchester folk too...little disappointing that they can do this..
shame shame shame on those scum rioters! No respect for anyone or anything! No more please!
Manchester should get together and show these scumbags...this is OUR city!!!!lets claim it back!
here, here.. its getting overun.
More of this please
http://juvo.se/7ft3.gif
excellent, give the guy in the green t-shirt a medal
Shameless... The Documentary
My god please don't touch the northern quarter, its heaven!
just got back in the flat, that was fucking frightening, Manchester is lawless. charging up the phone and back out in a minute
Never though I would say this but, Gordo you really are a hero! X
Keep it up ManCon, good reporting
yep well done Mancon. You are our local media.
Watch yourselves though.
And Mr Stringer,it's not the polices fault like you said on Sky
I see Liam Gallagher's shop's been ransacked. Bless.
bet the MCFC shop is okay though, who would want to loot that C**p!
It took Thatcher 5 years to get the 'disaffected' rioting in the streets, Cameron and the Condem posse have managed it in 15 months - roll on the next election!
Manchester is NOT lawless. Greater Manchester is full of many, many, many proud people. Manchester city centre and Pendleton have simply been temporarilly cowed by a few hundred cynical, generationally criminal, grasping, thieving, workshy arseholes.
The sky has not fallen. We've survived the Blitz and the 80s recessions, the IRA bomb and the Rangers fans. We'll doubtless survive this contretemps.
please ignore my accidental double Ls
great comment squirrelito - thats all it is, fucking lazy bastards having their night against the nation. Fixed and cleaned up before many of these wake up after their active night and we're all insured.
Maybe I’m getting the wrong idea from the pictures & report, but it doesn’t seem like there is a huge lot of ‘rioters’ out there… Does anyone has an idea of the actual number?
And on a different note… At first, those ‘riots’ (that really doesn’t seem to be the appropriate word) reminded me of Paris’, y’a know, the good ol’ “tough economic times + unvented anger + one isolated event that breaks the camel’s back”… Then, there would have been something to analyze, changes to be made, lessons to be learned… But kids who just want a free pair of jeans? Really? Is that what we’ve come to?
I feel there's about 375 Julie, with maybe about 300 hangers on. Nowt really.
675 too many...........
Stop your rioting and looting - it affects no one but the whole of the UK. We're already running on empty and your actions are not helping. government are obviously to blame and unless a peaceful revolution is implemented then nothing that an average person can doi will change the way the UK is run. An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind so let's enter this situation with clarity and make the changes for good for the whole of the UK and lobby the government
Just saw the leopard print pyjama wearing girl in the northern quarter. Her friend was asking where it was all kicking off and complained that the riots were not as good as London. I would have found it funny were it not so tragic and depressing.
Also saw about 10 police officers scatter a huge group who looted the newsagents and tried to get into the spoons in piccadilly. Well done to all of them.
I've just seen one of the cars driving around directing the scroats where to go. It's a white Focus RS and is driving around NQ, just been through Stevenson Sq a few times
Have you got the reg number Jay?
Appreciating manchester confidential keeping us all up to date, but as much as I normally enjoy the dry humour and wit I think it seems a bit misplaced with the current events....
boo hoo
Handwringing and wailing isn't the Mancunian way
This is such a shame, you have a beautiful city. I really hope not too much is damaged.
The problem of all these damaged, feral children is another matter. Make the parents pay!
One positive for Cameron is that these shenanigans will give the government an excuse - ahem, I mean reason - for the inevitably shitty Q3 economic data. After using up 'snow', 'lots of bank holidays' and 'Royal wedding', the excuses cupboard must have been rather Mother Hubbardesque.
I must have missed the bit where we said it wasn't going to happen Anon. If you don't like the site don't read it.
We'll get over it.
Your replies to criticism are so juvenile and amateurish, call yourselves writers and journalists, not a professional journalistic or writers qualification between you and it shows, frequently! Your early comment about the riots was so naive.
Oh, I see. Name calling only works one way. I get it now.
Your assumptions about my CV are wrong by the way.
This whole artcle is about violence. Why are you arguing, really? I just appreciate the updates
Keep you're heed doon Binsy... You're a long way from Hamilton St. Oh, and Anon... Your grammar sucks for someone complaining about writing standards.
Phousty!
I applied the valuable survival skills I learnt on Platform 2 of Mumps station.
I think both the Assistant Chief Constable and Councillor Pat Carney came across really well in tonight's press conference. To quote the Assistant Chief Constable, "Manchester will be back in business tomorrow". I for one will be there to support our great city.
If any property / business owners want some help to protect their premises, property etc. leave a message here. Hopefully we can get some help to you.
Are you Batman?
Serious question; is this ManCon staff offering useful help or some vigilante in a home made superhero suit attempting to step up to the plate?
I have been called many things but Batman is not one of them, lol. But I can try minus the cape.
Funnily enough I do have the Superman theme as my ring tone though.
so far rioters have caused 75 pence worth of damage to the precinct,a council spokesman added the cost could even go as high as 95 pence
This is exactly what my boyfriend said.
I'm not condoning the violence in any way. However, it is exactly that attitude and type of comment that gives the thieving looting scum the 'justification' to feel hard done by, making them think it's ok to do what they have done
anon i was there, i was threatend by the looters, in the store i work for in the city centre,so please allow me a little dark humour ,im not condoning it.
im just trying to get over it.
I love the idea that the parents of these scum will dob them in to the police...they are more likely to say "Well done Kylie.. free jeans and vodka...it's the first time you've got something yourself rather than depending on the DSS"
Our Chardoney and her brother De-Reecimo got us a nice new 50" telly. It looks reeeeely nice on the wall in the toilet.
If you are going to loot shops..why Foot Asylum? An indication of the level of intelligence of the scum....I know says Wayne "Let's loot!!.. I need a new pair of trainers"....
Thanks labour for the generation you have given us...
This is not political it's just a bunch of chavs nicking brands....
Yeah if only Tony had breast fed. Take some responsibility FFS.
are the rail stations safe?
The Univesity Buildings near the Piccadilly Station have been attached...
This is what you get for liberal upbringing of kids... DISGRACE... Simply SCUM. Yet I bet all their mothers are in the queue for their cheques in the morning!!!!
Back to the MEN forums with you please.
Anon, shut up would you? I was there tonight see above, let's not turn into one of those red-top rant pages. Think before you speak and when you do try and not overuse exclamation marks. There were, what, 1500 naughty people out, less than 350 I'd say who were instigators. This is not revolution, this is boredom and a lack of firm policing, teaching and parenting. It's about not being brought up right.
I think you have just proved his/her point here..... is 350 yobs not a problem?... This is extremely serious.. This shows a lack of respect, and parents lack of control (liberal upbringing)...
I don't know what the answer is because the other way does not work either. I just hope that anyone caught in this gets dealt with extremely seriously
I was in Claire's Accessories in the Arndale and an Arndale worker came into the shop and I overheard her saying to the girl working in the shop that the place was going to be closed dead on 6- this was around 5ish. As I walked around the rest of the Arndale, places were starting to bring their shutters down. It's just unfortunate it all kicked off before then.
What I have not understood is: there are other countries where young people do not have much money and are bored - but they do not end up in rioting.
So what is the reason behind that?
Sorry for the question - I am not british
how is everything this morning?? not had a chance to get into the city yet, is it really trashed??
A lot of the clean up took place overnight. Places boarding up broken windows at the mo and the side streets are now being cleaned by the riot clean up volunteers.
What an absolutely mental evening. Any idea what the next step is for the police, I'm assuming they're not just going to give out a load of ASBO's?
I've just read the question that Macon put to ACC Shewin this morning and, despite the fact that I admire the work that ManCon did last night, I feel that the question was at best naive, at worst stupid. The police are currently facing criminal charges for the death of a man at the G4 disturbance earlier this year in London; Met police have faced outrageous criticism for kettling 'innocence bystanders/protestors' in the fees protests; in the cup final riots in 2008 GMP had a number of unsucessful legal actions taken out against them by drunken yobs from Scotland;a large number of last night's yobs were kids, do you think GMP would have got away with breaking the heads of the precious little darling who were out committing last nights mayhem -No!
Even if the legal action taken against police for the 'street justice' meted out to the yobs is unsuccessful, there is still a cost - to the police officer facing investigation, to the good citizen who trys to protect themselves or their property facing investigation and to pay for the legal team etc who defend the legal action.
The answer is to instigation a major change in how society thinks; personal responsibility for actions; parents take responsibility for their children's action; earn respect, don't demand it.
Incidently, the word 'respect' has been hijacked and bastardised by the scum of society - the OED should change the definition of the 'respect' to 'the unrealistic expectation of scum, precious little darlings, drug dealing shit and gang affiliated yobbos to be glorified by their peers' and we should use the word 'esteem' in it's place.
Maggie, it's a question many people are asking. As a media outlet we should ask about policy as well
By all means ask questions, but make them sensible! I think that the general public realise that they, the police and victims of crime are at the back of the queue when we talk about human rights etc and that our current over-liberalised society does not protect honest citizens within the criminal justice system. This is however changing - the burglary at Ethel Street in Salford and the armed robbery in Stretford - but those citizens had to be arrested and put through the mill before they were released. A Police officer brandishing a baton at a poor little kiddy-looter would be branded a thug. When it comes to policing, today's hero can be tomorrow's villain!
I can confirm that the N4 is fully open and ready for business, sadly both jewelers on Thomas St were totally cleared out and a number of retail units around Oldham st. Brilliant clean up campaign this morning - please lets not be frightened by this and have the courage to crack on as normal!
I hear Manchester City signed Grabatelli last night.
I watched from my flat last night and found it quite organised. There were ring leaders in a white van and a few mercedes, where the loot was collected. Whistles and screams to inform the looters the police were coming were in place. There was around 100-150 kids tryint to smash the tesco cash machine on Oxford road for nearly 30mins uninterupted by police. They came down Oxford road and turned round and fled due to the mass mob. When the mounted police and dogs arrived the cars and vans temporarely blocked the road alowing the mass mob to flee. only to return to turn over Sainsburys where the staff had to flee for their lives.
NATIONAL SERVICE. PUT USE TO THE AGRESSION. QUALITY SERVICE MEN AN WOMEN ARE LOOSING THEIR LIVES FOR WHAT? YOBS HERE?
National Service to 'put use to the aggression'? Ah right, send them to kill dirty forriners so we* can nick their natural resources.
Sounds like a plan...
* and by 'we' I mean multinational corporations
Yawn. Our forces don't kill many foreigners, they help defend their liberty. Whether they should or not is an argument for another day
Well played to Manchester Confidential for sending an email last night saying only rumours about Manchester - businesses open as usual. Hope no one was stupid enough to follow your advice because living in the centre of town - let me tell you - was bloody scary and dangerous last night. Can't believe you we're advising people it was ok!!!
Ooops, so ManCon must have forgotten to consult their crystal ball before giving out their advice - hindsight is wonderful isn't it jam..etc
We didn't advise people to stay in town, nor did we say anything would or wouldn't happen.
What we did say was that plenty of rumours were reaching us but the police had stated their position.
To suggest we wanted to put people in harms way is wide of the mark, by a very long way indeed.
Stop back tracking, i'm didn't say you wanted to put people into harm nor am I saying you advised people to stay in town but by saying that businesses were open as usual you were indirectly saying that coming into town wasn't a problem - when it was dangerous. Read what you sent out. I received it in the evening when stuff had started from 5ish (which if you or any reporters were anywhere near the city centre would have know about due to the chaos going on) so a safer message would have been to advise people to stay away from the city centre just in case- something you didn't do. You either should of said that or nothing at all.
The fact that Confidential sent SOMETHING out was admirable in itself why wasnt a news bulletin warning us of the dangers why wasnt a strong police presence in town when there must have been tip offs? why werent the water cannons on stand by to disperse any gangs that had formed? Police dealt with this badly wonder what Fahy makes of it? has he come out of hiding yet? with Sir Richard? they should be here pronto!
What water cannons are these? The only part of Mainland Britain that has ever deployed water cannon is Belfast, hey that's an idea, why don't we bring in the army with live ammo to shoot at the kiddy-looters? derr
Yeh, why don't we???
1981 -a royal wedding city lose at Wembley, inner city riots
2011 - a royal wedding, city lose at Wembley, inner city riots
Makes you wonder eh?
Army couldve dealt with this better and the SAS - where are they? shit theyre in Afghanistan of course i forgot fighting other peoples wars.
Lets remember also that the police is set up as a plc as is the United Kingdom (seriously look it up on Dunn and Bradstreet business directory) therein lies the problem. You'll also find that because of this crime pays literally. the country is as bent as hell.
Get your facts right - ACPO is a plc, the overwhelming majority of serving police officers are ordinary men and woman doing a difficult job under constant misguided ill-informed criticism.
ACPO (Association of Chief Police Officers) are self-serving senior officers and make the policy (and money) for serving police officers
Should 'not serving police officers' at the end
I feel sorry for the police; if it was anywhere else in Europe, those causing violence would have been been forcefully stopped. Here in the UK, police can, and would go on trial for that. And then the EU would argue Human Rights, when in the majority EU countries it would be the norm to thwack a thieving, violent criminal to the ground. Who's being protected the most here? The moronic cretins doing this need to understand consequence; at the moment it's just a mad laugh for them. Exasperating doesn't cover it...
I think these people have no fear of any consequences, because there are none...what should have stopped them last night was their own sense of morality, which is clearly absent...maybe these kids thought the big companies such as diesel could stand the loss , but why smash up Oxfam? why mug students?
Yup, that's exactly my point - the police are relatively powerless when it comes to defeding themselves - and us - in situations like this; and the kids/rioters know it. Morality - wouldn't that be lovely; I absolutely agree - it's totally mindless, selfish criminaltiy. There's no rhyme or reason to it, and the rioters are grasping at straws for flimsy excuses for their actions when questioned: 'It's because of the rich people. It's the rich people's fault' is one such BBC quote. Fills you with pride, doesn't it???
In the "group" photograph of the teenagers giving the V sign, the blonde girl at the front in the animal print pants lives in the Bury area. Spotted her at just before 6pm yesterday near the town hall in Bury.
Bet she's really regretting putting those pants on

It's chuckin' it down, lets hope the rain puts them off.
The law has caught up on them!!
I don't think social media caused the riots but they did make it easier for people to communicate.
I have read a lot of articles about Facebook and the UK riots and although many posted on the open platform apparently it was more the private message facility that was used on their fake profiles.
Criminals have been using Facebook for years setting up(and closing) fake accounts, mainly football players, pop stars, cartoon characters, star wars(!) but surely the police must be able to trace the IP addresses.
Good luck anyway and I hope the UK government and the police make social media a safer place for tomorrow's children.
I do hope the police track these people down from the CCTV cameras and anything they posted or sent privately on social media.
NICE TO SEE FACEBOOK CHANGING AND GETTING SAFER WITH THEIR REPORTING PROCEDURES NOW IN PLACE.
SHAME THIS WAS NOT AROUND AT THE TIME OF THE RIOTS.
