MANCHESTER'S Arndale Centre has beaten its best-ever footfall figures for a Saturday, notching more than 232,000 shoppers on 3 December.
“We remain hopeful that we will break our all-time record for yearly footfall figures by the end of December."
The centre recorded an increase of 10.2 per cent year-on-year on last Saturday’s figures – in contrast to the North West region's overall decline of 4.9 per cent. The total footfall at Manchester Arndale last week topped one million shoppers.
The centre is now on course to beat the 39 million customers it recorded last year.
David Allinson, the new centre director at Manchester Arndale said: “Many have predicted a challenging Christmas for retail this year but we are currently performing well.
"It shows people still want to be able to ‘touch and feel’ products before purchasing. Our flagship stores, recent new retailer additions and our creative marketing campaigns have all helped strengthen the shopping proposition for Manchester Arndale, especially in the run-up to the festive period.
“We remain hopeful that we will break our all-time record for yearly footfall figures by the end of December. Manchester Arndale remains one of the UK’s top three inner-city shopping centres for footfall."
Allinson joined Manchester Arndale this week following the retirement of Glenn Barkworth.

What an absolute non-story. Guess what? I also walk thru' the Arndale to get from A to B.
Once upon a time, the term 'flaneur' was invented in Paris to describe the thoughtful non-shopper.
Is that what you mean when you count footfall rather than till rings?
Explain why it's a non-story.
Appropriate username or what?.... Idiot!
Walking from A to B, shopping or not (we don't know do we?) is not news.
If these numbers could be matched to some of the centre's retailers' (improved) sales figures, that'd show what a busy city centre we have. It looks an impressive gain to me, but it could be just more people walking through.
Why's it a non-story. It's about the city being busy. It's good.
The city is not 'busy'. People have nowt to do and just walk around.
Watch HMV, Debenhams and House of Fraser bomb this xmas.
It'll be the biggies this year, not just the minnows...
...and Argos
Would this be bad time to bring up the parking charges/ armageddon thing again?
Thing is: why are we not hearing of increasing SALES figures, as we used to for years by Tesco, Next, Superdry et al?
Because there aren't any!
Have some 'footfall' instead.
read my lips!
Why not call David A and ask him for an indication of the direction of sales (as you do if you want to put him on the spot) It's good training for the 'paid?' intern
Have you read my lips?
HMV already in the press... I do not recommend anyone giving VOUCHERS away for Xmas.
Remember what happened when Zavvi folded?
