Big businesses praise Greater Manchester
Greater Manchester is a great place to do business, according to some of the biggest companies located here
Date Published: 16/12/2009
The Manchester City Region is generally a better place to do business than other national or international equivalents, according to a new report compiled by the Business Leadership Council. But some business leaders think it still lacks the top-level talent needed to fill senior posts.
The reports' authors interviewed the leaders of 26 large businesses including BUPA, JW Lees and Proctor & Gamble to find out how the region's ten local authorities can make it better for businesses.
They found that businesses think that the region benefits from being well located with a good infrastructure and a strong critical mass of talent and people. It's viewed as a cost-effective place to invest as it is less bureaucratic than other parts of the European Union and less expensive than the South East.
But some firms thought that Manchester still had work to do to recruit top talent for some key roles. Businesses also want to see the region take more of a lead on green issues.
The report was commissioned by AGMA – the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities. Businesses interviewed called for closer links between all AGMA members and the representatives of large businesses, as this will help grow the city region's reputation as a great place to do business.
John Early, chairman of the BLC, said: "We spoke to a wide range of companies from homegrown success stories like the Co-operative and Warburtons to massive international companies who have a base here, including Kellogg's.
"What is really positive is that these businesses agree that the Manchester City Region is a great place to be based, with a fantastic pool of talented people to recruit from.”
