Have Tesco been “underhand”?

Simon Binns on Tesco’s clever methods of avoiding war with Chorlton’s indie-friendly residents

Food retailer Tesco has submitted a formal planning application to turn The Feathers pub in Chorlton into a convenience store.

“We would say that this is underhand and if Sir Terry Leahy does only want to open stores where the local community want them, Tesco should be up front about its intentions at the earliest opportunity.”

The new Tesco Express will be the firm’s second store in the area after it opened its first shop on Manchester Road.

The Feathers, on Barlow Moor Road, was vacant on and off for a year or more. Tesco wants to put new fascias and an ATM on the outside of the building to rebrand it into a new store.

Debbie Ellen, from the Keep Chorlton Interesting campaign group, said Tesco had been “underhand” in redeveloping the building after submitting earlier planning applications in a different name, to avoid detection.

“Earlier in the year, permission was granted for external air conditioning units but that application was submitted by SEH Pub Partnership.

“The planning officer told us the inference was that the site was being refurbished for use as a pub. We know of other cases across the country where a similar strategy has been adopted by Tesco.

“We would say that this is underhand and if Sir Terry Leahy does only want to open stores where the local community want them, as he has stated previously, Tesco should be up front about its intentions at the earliest opportunity.

“We would also suggest that the forthcoming changes to the planning framework require the retail occupier to be declared on applications in such cases.”

Crikey, Chorlton's going to explode into civil war at some point, Tesco shoppers on the one side and yummy mummy's and hippy's on the other.

See also Peel Holdings, who seem to have got a lawful development certificate (i.e. no planning permission required) to use their Museum of Museums as an exhibition centre. The newly acquired planning permission for the museum happens to fall under the same category as an exhibition centre (how convenient). Whilst the notion of an exhibition centre at the Trafford Centre isn't particularly offensive, if it was to become the primary use of the building it demonstrates the same exploitation of the planning categories that Tesco seem to be doing in Chorlton.

There's already three Co-Ops, a Morrisons (old school Safeways, respect)and of course the Tesco (opposite the Barbakan) to service us tofu weavers in Chorlton.
Trouble is that the market will sustain another one whether people actually want it in principal or not.
Time to put down the yoghurt and weave some hand grenades.

But don't the northern Chorltonites (called Whalley Rangers,) go to Adsa, even Sainbury's at Fallowfield and if desperate Waitrose at Cheadle? Tesco is so naff 1990's. Incidentally prices are rising like mad in Tesco, especially on dairy items. 12% rise on 'greek' yogurt in a week.
Not withstanding this the Cricketing/Superstore deal in not a real planning gain for the local communities. It stinks.

The Feathers will service Chorlton South, i.e. the council estate. No worries TESCO, you won't find any tree huggers there...

Unfortunately, where people have minimum choice in the war machine that is supermarket growth and development, they will always choose the lazy route and go with Tesco rather than getting there arse's out of bed to protest in the sorts of numbers that would deter Tesco from going ahead on account of the sheer numbers of people refusing to use it.

Tesco are nothing more than smiling assassins and although people know this they let them get away with it.
It seems to me that the market will soon be saturated with these offerings and the prices will be forced up as is already beginning to happen, milk in tesco is 45% more expensive than say B&M bargains, i know this, that's where i get my milk from.So if every little helps why are we being ripped off on food basics? bread £1.30 for a decent non-bleached natural ingredient loaf? We are being strangled by our own laziness and in continuing to shop with tesco et-al we are being directed in to forming habits which surround our Ikea type ,credit card fuelled must have it now lifestyles.

Tesco is here to stay until people wake up and demand better standards and quality by voting with their feet.
Grow your own veg it lasts for weeks in a sand box and costs fuk all

Or pay £1.50 for two curgettes which rot in three days!

TBLZEBRA, the Museum of Museums is next to the home ware section of the Trafford Centre (http://www.museumofmuseums.org.uk/). When you go in it looks like an empty exhibition centre, surprisingly enough.

LIDL veg is much cheaper, fresher and (this surprised me massively) local-er than Tesco. And I'm one of the saddos who goes out of my way to collect Clubcard points for 'free' holidays.

Venice, Crete and Corfu were fab, thanks for asking.

M if what you're implying is true, no wonder I've never heard of the Museum of Museums. They haven't done much adveritsing and/or PR have they.

How long has it been open? The website doesn't give much info.
