Peeling a Cube in Ancoats
Peel Holdings are creating 108 new homes in Ancoats, including some for first time buyers
Date Published: 08/07/2010 16:12:16
The next phase of East Manchester's regeneration project will start this summer with the launch of two new residential buildings called Mews and Cube near Piccadilly Station. They're part of a scheme to build 108 new homes in Ancoats led by Manchester Ship Canal Developments (MSCD) – the joint venture partnership between developer Peel Land & Property and Manchester City Council. MSCD has secured £5m in Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) funding to deliver the project.
Building work has already started on the new homes, including 30 townhouses at the Eastbank development in Ancoats. This latest project creates 100 construction jobs and the homes are being built by Trafford-based contractor Russell Construction.
Mews and Cube will be situated at Eastbank, near Piccadilly Station and will feature homes priced from £99,950.
James Whittaker, Manchester-based Peel’s development director, said: “We are building quality affordable properties at Mews and Cube that will be homes for first time buyers, downsizers, young professionals and families. It is about creating a community that will play its role in the resurgence of this part of the city and we are very pleased to be able to help deliver this part of the East Manchester vision.”
Mews is described as 'a thoughtfully-designed building comprising a total of 75 homes'. It has 30 two-bedroom and three-bedroom townhouses and 45 one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments and duplexes. Many of the townhouses have garages which is unusual for a city centre development. Cube, which has secure parking, consists of 33 one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments.
Eastbank has good pedestrian access to the city centre and is within walking distance of Sports City. A Metrolink stop is currently being constructed on the adjacent Pollard Street.
Deborah McLaughlin, North West director for the HCA, said: “We have a long term commitment to East Manchester so it is great to see so many new homes being developed in this key area of the city. This scheme will not only address the need for new housing in the area but also help create fantastic employment opportunities for the local community.”
