World Cup Summed Up

Charlie Butterworth on the World Wide Howard Webb, lovely Spain and Septic Blatter

Published on July 12th 2010.

World Cup Summed Up

So the vuvuzelas have gone silent. Night has fallen on the South African World Cup and the jackals of Holland have been outpaced by the gazelles of Spain.

But prior to the final they knew they wouldn’t be able to compete with the passing and movement of the Spanish, particularly in midfield, where the holy trinity of Iniesta, Xavi and Alonso play heavenly football.

Meanwhile Howard Webb has been torn to shreds by the press hyenas.

They’ve objected to him booking everyone on the pitch plus 65% of the fans in the stadium, and some hapless passers-by. Even I got booked. So did my mum. And she’s in a care home in Penrith.

At Confidential though we think Webb did a good job.

He was clearly trying to keep 22 players on the pitch so that we had some semblance of a competitive final. The only straight red should have been De Jong’s re-enactment of Bruce Lee’s astonishing acrobatic display in ‘Enter the Dragon’ (nothing to do with an unspeakable act forced upon Theo Paphitis by the way - for those too young to remember Bruce Lee ).

An average tournament with a below average England performance and the Dutch looking for someone other than themselves to blame for being shyte. I thought Howard Webb had a decent enough game in the circumstances, one or two dodgy decisions, De Jong should have definatly gone, but all in all, he got most things right and in years to come i think he should be particulaly proud of his involvement.

It wasn't a classic although I enjoyed it. That ball was shite. And you're right about the award ceremony. How dare Blatter push out the president. Was he pissed?

The best thing was Italy coming bottom of their group, France going out early and Spain winning

A negative judgment gives you more satisfaction than praise, provided it smacks of jealousy.

There's no such thing as impossible - it just hasn't happened yet.
